1. How Hard Is It Really to Get a Merchant Navy Job?

Securing a cadetship (trainee officer role) is highly competitive but highly structured. Companies are looking for candidates with strong high school grades, particularly in STEM subjects like Mathematics and Physics, because modern ships are highly technical. Beyond academics, the physical requirements act as a major barrier; you must pass a very strict medical exam which tests your eyesight, color vision, hearing, and overall physical fitness. The reasoning is simple: you must be able to perform emergency duties safely while miles away from a hospital. However, once you clear these initial hurdles and get accepted into a sponsored cadet program, your first ship placement is virtually guaranteed, as the company is investing in your long-term future.
